Nearly a decade after New Zealand’s Christ Church Cathedral was severely damaged in devastating earthquakes, work began on a NZD 104 million initiative to rebuild the historic landmark. Beca is providing structural, geotechnical, and geo-environmental monitoring services during the rebuilding process, which is expected to continue until 2027.
After encountering issues with their initial file-based monitoring solution, Beca shifted to a more data-centric approach and installed Viotel‘s wireless tilt and vibration sensors which stream real-time data directly to Bentley’s iTwin IoT platform.
The switch to iTwin IoT has enabled Beca to:
• Get consistent live data on the condition of the construction site
• Generate automated reports, saving time and improving data accuracy
• Create 3D visualizations to make the data easy to understand
• Share project information with a wide range of stakeholders
• Reduce staff visits to the site by 50%
• Improve safety with instant notifications of structure movement
